Creating a successful logo and brand identity goes way beyond designing a pretty picture. It's a strategic process that requires careful planning, research, and collaboration. Following a proven, structured approach ensures that your logo will be unique, memorable and perfectly suited to your brand's goals and personality. Strong brands aren’t born - they are built!
A guide to logo design and branding
A well-executed logo design process transforms abstract business concepts into visual representations that resonate with your target audience and differentiate you from competitors. This comprehensive guide outlines the essential and proven steps that we follow to create impactful brand identities that stand the test of time.
Phase 1. Discovery & Research
We begin every project with a thorough discovery phase. This is where we get to know you, your business and your aspirations. We’ll ask about your history, your values and what sets you apart in the market. Understanding your target audience and analysing your competitors gives us the insight we need to position your brand effectively.
During this stage, we also develop a detailed creative brief together. This document outlines your requirements, preferences and any specific ideas you have about style, fonts, colours and brand marks. We collaborate on mood boards, which help us align visually and strategically before any design work begins. This ensures that everyone is on the same page from the outset.
During this phase, designers will explore:
- Business objectives and values
What does your company stand for? What are your core values and mission? - Target audience analysis
Who are your ideal customers? What appeals to them visually and emotionally? - Industry landscape
How do your competitors present themselves? What visual territories are already occupied? - Brand personality
Is your brand playful or serious? Modern or traditional? Luxury or accessible? - Colour and Style Psychology
What hidden messages and feelings colours can convey and what styles are the right ‘fit’ for your company and sector.
Phase 2. Concept Development
After the initial discovery phase we move on to brainstorming and conceptualising. We create out a wide range of ideas, exploring different directions and creative approaches. From these designs, we select the most promising concepts and develop them into digital drafts.
To create a cohesive brand identity, we design the ideas and concepts by combining messaging, logo, colours, fonts, shapes and images in sample layouts. This holistic approach allows us to evaluate the entire experience at once, making it easier to identify and refine any individual elements that may not be aligning with the desired vibe. It allows us to explore a multitude of styles and ideas to see what feels right for the brand and company. Depending on your budget, the brand requirements along with the evaluation of the discovery phase will determine our approach within the concept exploration and presentation.
Unlike a piecemeal approach, where we might start with a logo and then add colors, fonts and other elements separately, our collaborative process will ensure that each component works harmoniously together. You can expect to see various solutions for the logo and other design elements, and we'll work together to select the best options that fit with the overall look and feel.
We focus on the versatility and scalability of your logo, as it needs to work everywhere, from a small website favicon to a huge office sign graphic or advertising board. We can also create mockups to show how each concept could look in real-world applications, such as business cards, product packaging, or digital platforms, but this usually comes later once we have refined our ideas.
Phase 3. Presentation & Review
Once the initial concepts are ready, we present them to you, typically accompanied by mockups and rationale for each design. This is a collaborative stage: we invite your feedback and discuss what resonates with you and what could be improved. Your insights are invaluable in shaping the direction of the design.
The design concepts will be presented in a screensharing meeting, where I'll walk you through the research and reasoning behind my design decisions. This is a fun and interactive way to reveal the design, and you'll also receive a presentation PDF via email to review at your convenience.
After you have reviewed the logo concepts in your own time, we will have a meeting to discuss your thoughts and feedback as you aim to pick out up to three concepts that we will explore further.
Phase 4. Refinement & Iteration
Based on your feedback, we refine the strongest concepts—usually narrowing down up to three options. We make adjustments to typography, colour palettes and layout, ensuring every detail aligns with your vision and brand strategy. This iterative process continues until you are completely happy with the final design.
We will then re-present the logo concepts in another meeting, where we can further explore and discuss any more refinements or look to settle on a final concept.
Once a final concept is chosen, we will enter into another round of refinements and adjustments if required; before we do some advanced clean-up of the designs as we prepare to create the final logo packages.
